Richards High School social studies teacher Christina Kreil was among eight remarkable women honored by Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs during a Women’s History Month celebration.

Kreil received the Outstanding Achievement in Sportsmanship Award for her inspiring contributions as the state’s sole member of the U.S. Women’s National Amputee Soccer Team.

Kreil and her team made history last year, earning a silver medal at the inaugural Women’s Amputee Football World Cup in Barranquilla, Colombia, on November 10, 2024. Her journey to the world stage is a testament to her resilience and determination.

Kreil has been playing soccer while battling a rare disease called metastatic giant cell tumor of the bone, which led to the amputation of her right foot below the knee. Despite the amputation, the disease persisted. “I currently have 17 tumors in my lungs and lymph nodes, and I’m not a candidate for chemotherapy because it’s not cancer,” she shared. Undeterred, Kreil continues to search for drug trials and specialists abroad, as there are no treatment options available in the U.S.

Through it all, Kreil has remained a beacon of strength, both on and off the field. Her dedication to her sport, her students, and her relentless pursuit of hope inspires everyone around her.

Congratulations, Christina, on this well-deserved honor! Your courage and sportsmanship remind us all to never give up, no matter the odds.
